Our Mission
Vision Screening in Our Neighborhoods (ViSION) is dedicated to bridging gaps in eyecare in and around Baltimore City. We partner with organizations that have existing community relationships to conduct comprehensive vision screenings with a particular focus on identifying early signs of glaucoma, which, if left untreated, can lead to blindness. In addition to facilitating the screenings, we are committed to providing any patient in need of follow-up eyecare with an appointment at the Wilmer Eye Institute, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. Moreover, if an ophthalmologist determines that surgical intervention is needed, there are charity funds available at Wilmer to cover all costs of treatment. ViSION is run by Johns Hopkins medical students under the guidance and supervision of our faculty mentor and volunteers. Since our founding in 2012, we have had the privilege of serving over 1,700 Baltimore residents, and we look forward to expanding our impact.

As of 2024, ViSION has conducted over 70 community vision screenings in and around Baltimore City. To make this possible, we have partnered with nearly 30 community service organizations. Some of our most recent community partners include CASA of Maryland, St. Mary's Outreach Center, the Esperanza Center, and Project PLASE, among others. Typically, screening events are held once per month between September and May. We are always looking to work with more community partners in Baltimore.
