ViSION partners with local community organizations to host eye screening events. On a scheduled Saturday from 9am to 1pm, community members are invited to a community screening site to participate in a free 1 hour ophthalmic evaluation performed by Johns Hopkins medical students. All students at the screening events are overseen by a board-certified, faculty ophthalmologist.
Faculty ophthalmologists train medical students in all techniques necessary to conduct these screenings. Various data points are gathered during the screening including Snellen visual acuity, pupil examination, intraocular pressure by rebound tonometry, FDT automated perimetry, Panoptic direct ophthalmoscopy, and optical coherence tomography of the macula and optic nerve.
At the end of the screening session, each patient will meet with a follow-up coordinator to discuss the results of the screening and the appropriate next steps. For individuals found to need additional care, we refer them to our follow-up clinic, which operates on the Saturday after the community screening event and is at the Wilmer Eye Institute in East Baltimore. For individuals in need of transportation assistance to the follow-up clinic, free round-trip Lyft rides can be arranged from their place of residence.
At the follow-up clinic, patients will be evaluated by physicians, optometrists, and medical students using the state-of-the art equipment at the Wilmer Eye Institute. Patients are provided with a more in-depth report of their eye health, and those who qualify receive a free voucher for prescription eyeglasses which can be redeemed at the Wilmer Optical.
