What It Is

The Manifest Refraction Fellowship started in 2024 and is a unique, 1-year fellowship that enables JHUSOM medical students to learn how to use a phoropter before starting an ophthalmology residency program. Each year, 2-3 students are hand-picked from a competitive pool of applicants to be trained individually by ophthalmology attendings at the Wilmer Eye Institute.

Who Should Apply

Application links will be sent out in the Fall of each calendar year to recruit the next cohort of MRF fellows. Second-, third-, and fourth-year students will be prioritized but all JHUSOM medical students, including those on a research year, are encouraged to apply and will be given serious consideration.

Components of the Program

Manifest Refraction Fellows will gain access to an arsenal of opthalmologic resources and world-class faculty at Wilmer, one of the top eye institutes in the world. Medical students will have the opportunity to receive resident-level education and training in several physical examination techniques to examine the eye. Students will learn how to use the following instruments:
– Phoropter
– Optical coherence tomography (OCT) machine
– Slit-lamp
